This workshop explains intellectual property rights present in digital projects and how to capture them into company assets.

Many companies are currently engaged in transformative digital projects, from start-ups implementing innovative services in software, to established businesses engaged in the digitisation of their physical and/or procedural processes.

The implementation of such digital projects necessarily involves software and hardware developments, regardless of whether it is carried out in-house or contracted out, and automatically gives rise to many forms of intellectual property rights, including copyrights, designs and trade secrets, with registration opportunities for patents, trademarks and/or designs.

Businesses have a vested interest in identifying, tracking and capturing these IP rights, as intangible assets underwriting the corporate value and competitive advantage contributed by the project.

The scope of this workshop is to explain to a corporate, non-specialist audience, which types of IP rights relate to which aspects of digital projects; how to identify and track IP rights as a project achieves milestones; how to avoid common pitfalls about IP rights; and how to assess registration opportunities and timing.

The workshop is designed for attendees to gain an understanding of

– which aspects of digital projects give rise to which forms of IP rights;

– which aspects of digital projects can be captured into patents, designs and/or trademarks;

– recommended business practices about IP rights identification, ownership and internal management;

– how are patent, trademark and designs applied for and prosecuted to grant in practice.
